Studies show 58% increase in retention, dual coding theory the secret of animated video’s success.

Here’s how the dual-coding theory works: If you only stimulate the auditory sense, people retain a mere 10% of information. But when you stimulate both the auditory and visual senses, you end up with a retention rate of 68% (an increase in retention of 58%).

So why does this happen? It happens because when people are visual learners, images are necessary to help them understand the information. Auditory stimulation alone won’t cut it. But if someone is more of an auditory learner, then the words support the images. Images alone won’t do the trick.

Animated videos leverage dual coding to increase retention.

Animated videos leverage dual coding so everyone is catered to in the best way possible. When you support the auditory channel with visuals, more details can be stored away in memory because rather than being stored sequentially the image is holistic. That’s why video, and especially animated video, is so effective. (It’s important to note that having a head talking to the camera is not dual coding, because in that case, the video would only be stimulating the auditory sense.)

In a 60-second story, you want to combine audio and visual metaphors to not only reduce the amount of time it takes to tell the story, but to activate more long-term memory. When people retain information about who you are and what benefits you have to offer, the more likely they are to visit your website, click on a link, send you an e-mail, or give you a call.

Explain what you do … in 60 seconds

Are you having trouble simplifying your message and explaining who you are and why you’re
different? Or do you need a way to make a boring product or service engaging?

It’s easy to get lost in your own product or marketing, and lose track of how to communicate what
you do with your audience in a way that’s engaging. An explainer video will help you to:

  • Bring your product to life and connect emotionally
    with your viewers
  • Tell your story
in a way that’s easy to remember
  • Explain complex concepts to customers
in a simple and effective way
  • Come across as compelling and resourced
in order to build credibility with prospects
  • Convey your value proposition
    quickly and clearly
  • Stand out from the competition
with a video that explains what you do

So who is Switch Video?

The shorter answer is that we’re an explainer video company who has helped businesses and organizations like Facebook, IBM, HP, American Express, Bayer, Abbott, Edelman and Wunderman to clarify their message and simply and effectively explain who they are and what they do. That’s the shorter answer.

The longer answer is that we help businesses and organizations unlock their potential by taking their ideas and turning them into understandable stories they can share with the world. These are the stories that turn businesses from small companies operating in a basement to the next Dropbox or Facebook. Our mission is to help organizations like yours distill what they do into a simple message that connects with customers and unleashes the full potential of their idea, business, or product.

Rypple used an explainer video to increase conversion rates 20%,
Jellyfish used one to land an $800k deal, and Inbenta used theirs to increase online leads by 20%.

The Dropbox story:

How an explainer video generated real
customer growth and revenue

One of the simplest videos out there is the Dropbox video, and if you doubt the power of explainer videos then you should drill
down into what that one stop-motion, paper-cut-out video has done for Dropbox’s customer growth and revenue. Here’s the story.

Dropbox had a lot of trouble pitching to investors.
People just did not understand what they were selling. (Imagine if you were trying to explain cloud storage 5 years ago; that’s like trying to pitch an electric car in the 1920s.) Dropbox’s CEO responded by making a video, a really simple one, to help get funding, and it worked.

Dropbox then had to explain what they did to potential customers and were failing.
They were spending lots of money to convince people to use a cloud service they didn’t know they needed. Dropbox had to do something, and fast. So they had an explainer video made and placed it as the ONLY form of explanation on their homepage. No copy. Nothing else. Just a video.

Dropbox’s growth skyrocketed to over 100M users, and their product video ended up increasing conversion by 10%.
In 2011 alone, a 10% increase in conversions meant an extra $48 million in revenue. In a single year alone!

The Dropbox Story

So if you’re wondering whether explainer videos can drive real business results, the answer is a resounding yes!
(But in case you need more proof, there’s another case study below to further make our point…)

Rypple increased conversion rates 20%…
and then bought them

Here’s how Rypple increased conversion rates by 20%
before getting purchased by Salesforce.

In 2010 Rypple contacted Switch Video about producing a short animated video to promote their performance management tool.
Rypple wanted a video that would improve conversion rates on their website and engage visitors.

We started by writing a script that connected with viewers on an emotional level, and then went on to produce a whiteboard style video.
By focusing on why people use Rypple, we were able to produce a video that clearly demonstrated that Rypple understands their customers’ needs and empathizes with their pain.

Following the production process, Rypple placed the video on their home and landing pages.
The video was tested against a control page and another landing page containing a live action testimonial from Facebook. Not only did the landing page with Switch’s video perform better, increasing conversions by 20%, but it also lowered the customer acquisition cost and generated leads that were more engaged and ready to use the product.

Rypple’s video also outperformed industry standards for video engagement.
The average play rate for an online video that’s less than two minutes in length is 16.9% (play rate is the percentage of visitors who start watching a video). Rypple’s video received a play rate of 30%, 78% higher than the average. Not only so, but the average playthrough rate, i.e. the number of people who watch a video through to completion, for a two-minute video is 40%. Rypple’s video gained a 50% playthrough rate, 25% higher than the average.

The Dropbox Story

“I hear from lots of people at top companies that the video tells a story that they can easily relate to, and very clearly. That probably also explains why overall engagement with the app was higher – more inspiration to explore Rypple, invite people and try stuff out. We find that once people make a point of doing that, engagement goes up dramatically – as does the number of people invited.”

Jesse Goldman, VP of Customer Success at Rypple

What sets Switch apart?

We put as much time into developing the script and messaging as the visuals themselves.
Nearly anyone can create a video that looks nice, but not everyone has an experienced team of professionals that are trained to craft the most effective message possible.

We focus on coming up with the right call to action.
Explainer videos are about getting the viewer to do something after watching the video, so we make sure to come up with the right call to action in the script-writing process.

We do our own research and brainstorming to figure out who your target audience is.
We want to know what technical terms and keywords we should be using to reach your customers because we understand the importance of using the right language and knowing exactly who your customers are.

We offer full translation services.
This means that every video looks like it was originally made in that language. So far we’ve made videos in 10 different languages.

Our creative team is all in-house which means our script writers can collaborate directly with our animators
This makes sure that the most effective message is crafted with what can’t be shown verbally shown visually and vica versa. It also makes sure that everyone is on the same page at all times.

You’ll be amazed what you can communicate in 60 seconds and 140 words when the right team is working on your project.

We’re used to getting tons of content that we have to streamline to create a simple yet effective message.

How do we stack up?

You may be wondering how we compare to the other explainer video companies. Well, one thing’s for sure: you can get a cheaper video by going with someone else. There are lots of companies that will make a video for around $3000 to $5000.

But what they can’t give you is the experience of crafting compelling messages for some of largest brands in the world. Not only do we create beautiful videos, but we write effective scripts that are the secret to bringing your story to life. We also have the experience of managing 375+ video-production projects and hit our deadlines every single time.

If you’re looking to save some money, you can definitely find someone who will do it cheaper. But if you’re looking to work with someone with years of experience working with some of the top brands in the world and someone who understands the brain science of video and the importance of an expertly written script, you’re welcome to work with us.

In the end it’s not just a question of how much the video will cost but how much the completed project will deliver for your brand. When you look at it that way, we’re confident we stack up with the best of the best.

3 keys to effective explainer videos

1MetaphorsMetaphors are one of the keys to successful explainer videos. Why? Because they connect to prior knowledge which is a critical to how knowledge is built.

Without a metaphor, people are required to remember new information from scratch. They don’t have anything to “hang” the memory on. But with a metaphor, new concepts are tied to previous memories, making new information easier to understand and remember.

We’ll help you come up with the best metaphors to explain what you do and connect with your customers prior knowledge base.

2StorytellingAnother key is building a story around your product. People tend to pay attention to stories. It’s the reason we get sucked into great movies and exceptional novels. We can’t stop because we want to know how the story ends.

This works to your advantage with animated video. When you build story around your product, suddenly it comes to life and people can conceptualize how they might use it as opposed to being a static, distant object. They also want to watch all the way to the end. It becomes an active experience with the product and the brand, which is critical on websites where it’s easy to have a very passive experience.

Animated video’s ability to tell a story through audio and video helps to bring your product to life and helps you to connect emotionally with your customers.

3MessagingEffective messaging is the other key to a successful explainer video. Lots of people think visuals are the most important, but actually, messaging, i.e. the script, ends up being the most critical.

It comes down to simplifying your message, yet, if you oversimplify something to a niche audience, you’ll insult them. There’s a fine balance between simplifying too much and not simplifying enough.

It’s crucial to find the right message to reach your audience, which is something we’ve been doing for years. Our top priority is to craft a video that not only creates the best visual representation of what you do but also shares the most effective message to your target audience

Will animated videos work
with my branding?

Yes! Animated videos can be tailored to match any kind of corporate branding.

Porter Novelli

We used Intermedia’s beautiful colour scheme to create something that stands out while also explaining their cloud services to small and mid-sized businesses.

Porter Novelli

This video for Cooperators employed a whiteboard style while also splashing their corporate colors throughout.

Porter Novelli

Once again, we matched the branding of Opinion Lab to produce a video that works well with any of their brand materials.

The 4 different animation styles

2D Animation

This style is the most creative, and it’s also the most popular. 2D animation provides the most possibilities based on colors and characters that can be used and gives you the most control over your video.

Porter Novelli

Whiteboard Videos

The pros of whiteboard videos is that they’re structured, very “to-the-point,” and communicate information in a simple and effective way. They work with a wide range of audiences from 25 and up and are highly engaging and spark curiosity in viewers.

Porter Novelli

Stop Motion / Claymation

Stop motion and claymation videos are creative and provide a more “life-like” quality to the characters in your video. They’ve very inviting, warm, and nostalgic.

Porter Novelli

Motion Graphic

Motion graphic videos are colorful, to-the-point, and straightforward in presenting facts. They’re similar to whiteboard in that they present a lot of facts, yet they’re more colorful and more creative. They can also use different styles of fonts for more options, and there’s not a hand shown drawing in the video.
